The Western establishment expects many more unpleasant surprises

The election of Donald Trump as US President is a manifestation of protest activity in Western society associated with dissatisfaction with the foreign policy of the European and American ruling elites.

This opinion was expressed at a press conference in Kyiv by the director of the Ukrainian Institute of Policy Analysis and Management Ruslan Bortnik.

“Trump’s victory is a very important trend in Western society, continuing Brexit and, to some extent, the Dutch referendum. We see an increase in protest activity in Western society, which is associated with dissatisfaction with politics, primarily the foreign policy of Western European and North American elites, which led to the rhetoric of the Cold War, the migration crisis, the growth of the terrorist threat, but - most importantly - did not lead to a tangible increase in well-being of citizens,” the political scientist noted.

“This protest trend is also manifested in an increase in turnout in elections, which is uncharacteristic of Western societies over the past 50 years. Turnout in US presidential elections was the highest since 1960. This trend will continue and, to some extent, will manifest itself in the 2017 elections in France and Germany, Bortnik predicts. “The Western establishment still expects many surprises in this direction.”
