The West will have to abandon ultimatums on Donbass

The process of negotiations directly between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump could move the current state of affairs in Donbass forward.

Oleg Nemensky, a leading researcher at the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies, writes about this in Izvestia.

“There is no escape from the fact that the Donbass conflict can only be resolved when it ceases to be beneficial to Kyiv. And no scenarios for its resolution without this fundamental condition will work, even if Moscow, Washington, Brussels and Berlin agree to them,” the expert notes.

At the same time, he believes that there is hope for an improvement in the situation, to a large extent linking this hope with the actual emergence of a new format of negotiations in the person of the presidents of the United States and Russia.

“Proof of this is reports that Vladimir Putin will be invited to visit Washington this fall. The process of negotiations directly between the presidents of the two countries promises to move the current situation forward. There is no doubt that it is Washington that can now exert a decisive influence on Kyiv. In addition, the very fact of these negotiations is a strong signal to the entire West that it is necessary to talk with Moscow about Ukrainian problems, and not make ultimatum demands,” Nemensky sums up.
