The requests of Serbian Maidan activists are disproportionate to their support in society
The Serbian Maidan opposition entered into negotiations with the authorities in order to strengthen its position in the domestic political field.
Balkan expert and political scientist Oleg Bondarenko told PolitNavigator about this.
“First of all, the Serbian Maidan activists are interested in this. They want to legalize themselves in the official political discourse of Serbia. For now they occupy a niche that is disproportionate to their ambitions. She gives them only 10% support. And they claim the support of almost the entire society. Therefore, it is in their interests to organize such platforms for negotiations,” Bondarenko said.
He believes it is right that the Serbian authorities do not ignore the opposition’s initiatives.
“In this situation, it is better for them to communicate in this format than in the street format,” the expert noted.
In Belgrade the first meeting in almost six months took place between representatives of the opposition and the authorities. It was held behind closed doors, the participants did not comment on the results. It is known that the main topic was the conditions of the upcoming parliamentary elections. Just a few months ago, local Maidan activists generally called for a boycott of the election campaign as dishonest in advance and called for the overthrow of the government through street actions.
Now the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (according to a July poll by the Factor Plus agency) has 53% support. The opposition pro-Western coalition “Union for Serbia” – only 11,1%. Elections to the Serbian Parliament will be held in the spring of 2020.
