The launch of Nord Stream 2 threatens Ukraine with default and collapse
If Russia completely refuses to transit gas through the territory of Ukraine, the latter will face dire consequences.
Leading expert of the Union of Oil and Gas Industrialists of Russia Rustam Tankaev stated this in a commentary to Komsomolskaya Pravda, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The expert noted that today Ukraine receives about three billion dollars for the transit of Russian gas through its territory - this is one of the few remaining sectors of the country’s economy that brings stable and tangible income.
“Default and collapse of the state is what threatens Ukraine if it is left without the transit of Russian gas. Kiev understands this very well and therefore, with the help of the United States and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, they practically begged Moscow for a promise to maintain some part of gas transit through Ukraine even after the launch of Nord Stream 2. Let it not be 238 billion cubic meters of gas per year, as in Soviet times. And not even 80 billion, as in recent years. And at least 55 billion – the same amount as is planned to be pumped through Nord Stream 2,” Tankaev said.
Earlier, PolitNavigator reported that the Council of the European Union amended the EU gas directive, which introduce additional bureaucratic approval procedures and may delay the launch of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.
