Verkhovna Rada meeting on martial law began with a scandal
An emergency meeting of the Verkhovna Rada, where deputies must approve or reject Petro Poroshenko’s decree on introducing martial law, began with a scandal - representatives of Oleg Lyashko’s faction surrounded the podium and began chanting “Break!”
Lyashkovites demand the introduction of martial law, but not cancel the presidential elections, which were to be held on March 31, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Lyashko said that canceling the elections would mean an attempt by Poroshenko to “usurp power.” He demanded that the period of martial law be reduced from 60 to 30 days, that diplomatic relations with the Russian Federation be severed and that Russian property be nationalized, but that the rights of citizens not be limited.
Speaker Andrei Parubiy, despite the cries of protest from the Lyashkovites, read out an opening speech accusing Russia of open aggression, after which he announced a break for 10 minutes.
The reason for the fuss made by Lyashko is banal bidding, blogger Elizaveta Bogutskaya, who fled Crimea and is now a member of the team of Mikheil Saakashvili, exiled from Ukraine, explained in her blog.
“Lyashko “demands” consultations with the president. Apparently, he wants to clarify the amount of his financial participation in the vote for martial law,” explains Bogutskaya.
