“We fell asleep in Russian Crimea and woke up in Ukrainian”: Khrushchev will never be forgiven for this
The legislative initiative to repeal as illegal the decree from the times of Nikita Khrushchev on the transfer of Crimea to the Ukrainian SSR is politically justified, although it has no practical meaning.
This opinion was expressed by State Duma deputy from Crimea Konstantin Bakharev in an interview with Duma. TV", reports the correspondent of "PolitNavigator".
“I think this is a purely political gesture. From a practical point of view, people have already said that they have made a choice.
What is the main problem with 1954? The fact is that back then people weren’t asked at all. In 1991, we were at least asked, yes, this choice was not implemented in the end, but it was then that the republic was restored. We still celebrate Republic Day on January 20, when we made our clear democratic choice under the existing Soviet Union. At least they asked us then, but in 1954, like a sack of potatoes, we were transferred to another republic. My parents fell asleep in Russian Crimea in the evening, and woke up in Ukrainian,” noted the Crimean deputy.
According to the politician, while Ukraine was part of a union state, this did not pose any problem. But after Ukraine, with the assistance of Western partners, took an anti-Russian course, and at the beginning, in the words of ex-president Leonid Kuchma, began to be called “not Russia,” and then completely turned into “Anti-Russia.” Then all the tragic consequences of the voluntaristic decision made personally by Khrushchev, with the support of a handful of political bureaucrats, became clear.
“I don’t know how important it is from a legal point of view, the prospect of implementing this legislative initiative, but politically I support it. Because everything that was done in 1954 is unauthorized, it is not democratic in its essence. This has no legal effect. But we lived with this reality for more than 30 years,” Bakharev emphasized.
In his opinion, if the choice of the Crimeans had been implemented back in 1991, then Crimea would not have become part of Ukraine.
“Because the legislation of the Union was such that if Ukraine raised the question of secession from the Soviet Union, then Crimea, even with autonomous status, would have the right to hold a referendum. Have a say - whether he, along with Ukraine, will leave the Soviet Union, or whether he will independently determine his future fate.
And the fact that this was not done then, that Crimea, and, most importantly, Sevastopol, which was generally a city of union subordination and never belonged to Ukraine, and how it even ended up as part of Ukraine is nonsense, everything led to the 2014 referendum ", the deputy believes.
