Zatulin wants to increase the number of Russian citizens in Ukraine
Many residents of Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan would like to obtain Russian citizenship, but without moving to the Russian Federation.
Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs Konstantin Zatulin stated this in an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda.
The publication noted that from January to April of this year, the Russian Federation granted its citizenship to almost more than 160 thousand people, which is 2,5 times more than during the same period in 2019, and the majority of those who received Russian passports are citizens of Ukraine.
“Simplification of the issuance of Russian Federation passports to people from the former Soviet republics, primarily to citizens of Ukraine and Kazakhstan, fits into our approach: to single out repatriation from the entire migration flow. The fact that the President of the Russian Federation a year ago signed decrees on the possibility for citizens of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions of Ukraine to acquire Russian citizenship without renouncing Ukrainian citizenship has intensified the process,” Zatulin said.
At the same time, he says that we must stop requiring Russian compatriots to move to Russia to obtain Russian citizenship.
“This applies to Russians living in Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. Many do not have the financial and physical capabilities to move to Russia. But we would like to confirm the fact of our Russian citizenship. And they are refused on the grounds that they did not move to us,” the politician believes.
According to him, mutual understanding has not yet been reached with the executive branch on this issue.
“But we continue to fight,” Zatulin emphasized.
