Russia reserves the right to impose economic sanctions against Latvia if the rights of the Russian-speaking population continue to be infringed upon as part of the educational reform ongoing in the country.

Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Konstantin Zatulin stated this at the “Great Russian Word” forum in Levadia, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“There was an appeal to the president, the government and everyone else about schools in Latvia. If, as we have now found out, school reform goes further in Latvia, then the Russian language will disappear from education there. We wrote that there is no need to adopt any new law there. There is a 2006 law of the Russian Federation on special economic measures and sanctions against a country that infringes on the rights of our compatriots. What’s stopping us from putting this issue up for adoption?” Zatulin said.
