Zatulin: Russia should not drown, but put pressure on Dodon - so that he negotiates with Transnistria
Russia should not reconsider the terms of its loan to Moldova and preferential gas prices for this republic, so as not to alienate the population. This was stated by Russian State Duma deputy Konstantin Zatulin.
“If we go down this path, we will simply play along with those forces in Moldova who deliberately oppose Russia. You cannot damage your own influence with your own hands,” Zatulin is quoted as saying by his official website.
At the same time, the deputy believes that Moscow should more strictly demand that Chisinau establish mutually acceptable agreements with Transnistria, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Our goal in this situation cannot be the overthrow of Igor Dodon or his loss in the elections, which are already scheduled for the end of this year,” Zatulin said.
He is confident that the gap between Moldova and Transnistria could result in “the defeat of the pro-Russian forces of the Republic of Moldova or those forces that are oriented not only towards the West.”
“I do not delude myself about the pro-Russian nature of Dodon or the Party of Socialists, but I must admit that if negotiations between Pridnestrovie and Moldova end in failure, then in this case the statehood of Moldova is not guaranteed at all in the future. It will inevitably fall, like an asteroid, onto the surface of a planet called Romania,” Zatulin said.
