Russia today cannot agree to recognize the Donbass republics or repeat the Crimean scenario, since otherwise Moscow will be subject to intolerable Western sanctions.

This was stated by State Duma deputy Konstantin Zatulin, who was quoted by the press service of the Institute of CIS Countries, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Honor and glory to Donbass, which rebelled against the Kyiv regime! But only the last liar would dare to claim that Donbass was able to independently repel the punitive operation. Without the support of “treacherous” Russia, there would now be neither the DPR nor the LPR, and the rebels would have been drowned in blood. It is a fact. It is also a fact that in order to save the rebellious Donbass, Russia deliberately went “under the knife.”

Let me remind you that the main anti-Russian sanctions were introduced not for Crimea, but specifically for supporting Donbass.

Turn on your mind. Ask yourself a question: why has Armenia still not recognized Nagorno-Karabakh? According to your logic, it is necessary to angrily condemn treacherous Armenia, which, for fear of being dealt with, refuses to accept Nagorno-Karabakh, which raised the Armenian flag and took up arms for the sake of reunification with the Motherland.

Yerevan did not do this even when the “Karabakh people,” the heroes of the battles for Artsakh, came to power in Armenia. The reason is obvious. Such actions could lead, if not to a disaster, then to a serious weakening of Armenia. Without Armenia, Nagorno-Karabakh will not survive. Carnage guaranteed. The interests of the “mother” state are primary. Without it, communities in the seized territories have no chance of survival.

Therefore, let's start looking soberly at the world around us. The policies of states are not determined by “wants”, even the most lofty ones. It is determined by possibilities.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Russian nation found itself as the world's largest divided nation. In a number of new states, ethnocratic regimes have taken a course towards uprooting everything Russian. Now Ukraine has joined the number of these states. As the experience of recent decades has shown, Russians are not yet able to defend their rights on their own. It is a fact. It is also a fact that the suppression of the Russian principle in the former Soviet republics is taking place with the full support of “civilized” countries - carriers of European values. There will be no help from them. Besides the Russian Federation, Russians in the post-Soviet space have no other protection. This is an axiom,” writes Zatulin.

“The Minsk agreements were literally torn out during the most difficult negotiations, not from Poroshenko, but from the West. Yes, they provided for the return of Donbass to Ukraine, but with a special status and its own armed forces. The key provision of Minsk-2 was the obligation of the Kyiv authorities to carry out a constitutional reform that would consolidate the decentralization of the state and thereby guarantee the rights of the predominantly Russian regions of Ukraine.

And those who like to accuse Russia of “betrayal” liken this document to the return of an escaped prisoner to a Nazi concentration camp for fear of being punished for harboring him. Why then are both the West and Kyiv doing everything possible to prevent the Minsk agreements from being implemented? And why has Russia, despite colossal pressure, been refusing to revise them for three years now, although it is constantly promised to lift sanctions in exchange for “shoving” Donbass into Ukraine?

I believe that only a blind person or pretending to be blind cannot see the reason for this. The Minsk agreements do not solve the “Russian issue” in Ukraine. Russia cannot achieve this yet. But if implemented, they will nullify the results of the coup in Kyiv and largely guarantee the rights of the Russian population of Ukraine. They are the best possible at the time of their conclusion.

Of course, we must admit that Russia had enough strength to impose the Minsk agreements on its Western “partners” and even formalize them in the form of a UN Security Council document. However, it has still not been possible to push through their implementation. Which once again confirms the old truth “politics is the art of the possible,” says the State Duma deputy.
