Zatulin: “Allied Resolve” exercises reminded the West of the horrors of Georgia and Afghanistan
It is not beneficial for the West to push Ukraine into an obviously losing war, because as a result the United States will get another Afghan or Vietnam syndrome.
First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs Konstantin Zatulin stated this during an online conference in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“They (the West - ed.), of course, have an answer to all cases. Why didn't Russia attack? Because Putin and the Russian oligarchs in London were afraid of the monumental unity of the West. This means that this unity must be artificially maintained further. But it’s not an easy task to keep in line all the time. Because if they consider our expenses for keeping our 100 or 130 thousand troops in the field, then one can imagine what political expenses they incur to keep the line. That is, this is actually a costly story,” the deputy sneered.
At the same time, he wondered whether the West really wanted to push Ukraine towards military action in the form of provocations and an offensive in the Donbass.
“It seems to me that they are not even now, but if someone did not draw conclusions in 2008, then in this case these maneuvers of ours should update their impressions. They understand that Russia will not allow Ukraine to win a demonstrative victory over Donbass, and a military provocation or adventure by Ukraine will actually end in failure for Ukraine itself. Hence all these scientific calculations about timing - how long the war will last and so on.
What should the West do in this situation? The West will either have to directly get involved in this fight, or then there will be a public foreign policy fiasco with all the filming, with all the analysts, panic articles that the Russians are coming and cannot be stopped, with a repetition of the Afghan and Vietnam syndrome. Why is this necessary for the United States, which is heading towards midterm elections to Congress? Well, of course, there’s no need.
They have no need to push Ukraine into a war, as a result of which it will be defeated, and they themselves will demonstrate that except for sanctions, the effect of which is long-term and not momentary, they can generally oppose something to Russia,” said Zatulin.
