“The program has been opened, and now negotiations are underway in connection with the bankruptcy of the Black Sea plant on the assignment of agreements on the further construction of the corvette,” Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine Igor Pavlovsky said today, speaking in Kiev at a defense forum.
However, the official decided to describe the situation as a whole optimistically, assuring that the Ministry of Defense is successfully “restoring the combat potential” of what was left of the Ukrainian Navy after 2014. As an example, Pavlovsky mentioned the commissioning of artillery boats built at Petro Poroshenko’s plant.
“Last year, in accordance with the allocation of financial resources to carry out priority tasks, two ships were launched.
Today, Prozorro is undergoing modernization with new models, including the exit from import substitution, the Hetman Sahaidachny, the flagship of the Ukrainian fleet. What we returned from Crimea is the restoration of combat potential. Over the past year, we managed to overhaul four more combat ships.
This year we plan to further increase the composition of our Navy with four to six small armored ships... Work is underway on the issue of re-equipping another ship, budget funds have been allocated for this, but I would not like to voice this in front of the press,” Pavlovsky reported.
The deputy minister also stated that “it is desirable to have joint shipbuilding projects with Eastern European partners.”
