Early elections may be announced in Kosovo tomorrow
Elections to the local “parliament” may take place as early as September 29 in self-proclaimed Kosovo. The reason was the July announcement of the resignation of “Prime Minister” Ramush Haradinaj in connection with his summons as a suspect to the Hague Special Court, where war crimes are tried.
“President” Hashim Thaci, competing with Haradinaj for influence, would be happy to form a new loyal government, avoiding elections that threaten unforeseen scenarios. In this, according to local media, Thaci is supported by his Albanian colleague Edi Rama. However, the chances of success of this scenario are already slim.
Political parties have announced the upcoming vote to dissolve the “parliament” at a meeting scheduled for tomorrow, August 22.
“The West believes that the elections will further destabilize Kosovo and will also delay negotiations with Belgrade. White House National Security Adviser John Bolton has already postponed his visit to Kosovo, and there will be no dialogue with Belgrade until a new government is formed. In recent weeks, Thaçi has been in search of a new prime minister, but this has been rejected by "Kosovo Foreign Minister" and leader of the "Alliance for a New Kosovo" Behdget Pazolli and the speaker of the "parliament" Kadri Veseli. All this suggests that it will be very difficult for Thaci to avoid elections,” the source told Blic.
