The statement of the US ambassador caused indignation of the Serbian minister
For Serbia, we should forget about the third way and focus exclusively on the European Union.
US Ambassador to Belgrade Christopher Hill stated this in an interview with the Politika newspaper.
“There is no better way to describe Serbia than to say that it is a European country. Unlike in the past, when it was believed that there is a third way in Serbia, that Serbia is neither East nor West, that it is somehow special, that it goes its own way, now most Serbs think that there is a right way and a wrong way and want to choose the right path. There is only one way, and that is the West, that is, the European Union,” said the American diplomat.
According to him, the Serbs need to decide whether to “purchase weapons from different countries or join collective defense.”
The American also said that “it is not in Serbia’s interests to be so energy dependent on Russia.”
At the same time, the US position on imposing only one path on Belgrade caused a reaction, including in political circles. In particular, the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Alexander Vulin, responded quite harshly to Envoy Hill.
“From 2000 to 2012, Serbia was a country created especially for Ambassador Hill. Face to face only with the West, at the gates of NATO, without the initiative to solve the problem of Kosovo and Metohija, without the desire and will to defend the Republika Srpska, with the remnants of the army sold to those who bombed us.
Serbia was rewarded with the declaration of independence of the so-called Kosovo, massive extraditions to the Hague Tribunal, the reduction of jurisdiction to the Republika Srpska, predatory privatization, unemployment, poverty and social injustice,” Vulin said in a statement.
