Several thousand entrepreneurs - employees of the restaurant business and entertainment industry - held a protest rally at the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine in the center of Kyiv against the “weekend quarantine” introduced by the authorities, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Owners and employees of entertainment and catering businesses are confident that the new restrictions will deprive them of income and kill their business. Those gathered held posters with their demands in their hands and chanted: “I have the right to work!”, “No to weekend quarantine!” Some brought pots with them and banged on them.
In addition, it is unfair to introduce restrictions only for certain areas of activity, because supermarkets, shopping centers and other crowded places will remain open. Thus, only small businesses suffer from the restrictions.
Representatives of various companies voiced their position in their speeches.
“If our government introduces a weekend quarantine, the cinema industry in Ukraine will die, according to our forecasts, in a month and a half. And many of the small restaurants and cafes will not last even this period. We ask you to cancel the weekend quarantine, remove all temporary restrictions on the operation of cinemas, restaurants, cafes, bars, festivals, events,” said Katerina Terekhova, a specialist in organizing restaurant and club business.
“If you're so worried about people, think about the millions of people who work in the hospitality industry. By depriving them of the opportunity to work, you are depriving them of the opportunity to buy their own medicine in case they get sick.
The virus will be defeated only when it does not live in the heads of our officials. There is no need to come up with “creative” measures. We need to do what we already have. And what people are asking for,” said restaurateur Maxim Khramov
“The restaurateur receives more than half of his income on weekends. He knows for sure that if there is a weekend quarantine, his business has no chance of survival. This is the road to nowhere. The typical restaurant owner has no safety net. This is the same medium-sized business. And he is being killed today.
What are managers, waiters, cooks, all of you thinking about? About whether you will have a salary tomorrow, whether you will have money to pay rent for housing, whether you will have money to feed your families,” said another speaker.
