Ze-team can get hit hard in the teeth in a fight with disobedient mayors - study
In local elections in Ukraine, the fight for the posts of mayors of Kyiv, Kharkov and Odessa could lead to acute conflicts between Zelensky’s team and local elites.
This is stated in a study by the Center for Political Conjuncture (CPC), which is headed by the famous Russian political scientist Alexey Chesnakov, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The local elections scheduled for October 2020, which will complete the process of rebooting power in the country, could become a problem for the presidential Servant of the People party,” the CPC said.
It is noted that the “decentralization” reform launched by Poroshenko strengthened local elites, who received a financial base to realize their ambitions.
“Zelensky’s new rivals are influential mayors who openly express disagreement with the policies of the central authorities and rely on well-established political machines. Many of them personify conservative and anti-reformist forces,” the Center noted.
According to the CPC, “the struggle for the posts of mayors of Kyiv, Kharkov and Odessa could lead to acute conflicts between Zelensky’s team and local elites.”
