Zee hypocrisy: The Rada again decided to flirt with the Russians
Next year, the Verkhovna Rada may consider a bill to abolish fines for using the Russian language in the service sector, which are introduced by the law on total Ukrainization, adopted by parliament and signed by President Vladimir Zelensky.
A corresponding initiative was introduced by a deputy from the ruling Servant of the People party, Maxim Buzhansky, who is part of a group of deputies oriented towards the oligarch Igor Kolomoisky.
“Fines are absurd, businesses are only required to pay taxes and nothing more, the rest is regulated by the market. I don’t want to change anything piece by piece in the language law itself, it’s all crooked. But I propose to simply cancel these fines. And solve this issue in this way, and not breed informers,” the deputy wrote in his blog.
True, the media, in particular Rossiyskaya Gazeta, doubt that this idea will find parliamentary support.
“The very figure of the initiator causes skepticism: Buzhansky in the Servant of the People faction plays the role of a “professional Russophile” - the only person who regularly challenges the dictatorship of nationalists in the humanitarian sphere, and who consistently - that is, never - has found support from his colleagues. Although sociology, including that conducted on behalf of American institutions, and even statistics of search queries of Ukrainians on the Internet, indicate that the Russian language remains very in demand,” the publication notes.
In addition, the author believes, President Zelensky, whom 42 percent of Ukrainian citizens surveyed called “the disappointment of the year,” has a need to regain the sympathy of Russian-speaking voters who have been deceived by him more than once.
“And here Buzhansky’s initiative comes in very handy. But this does not mean at all that it will be adopted - the balance of power in the Rada is such that there are guaranteed not to be enough votes for its adoption,” RG summarizes.
