The head of the Kyiv regime, Vladimir Zelensky, expressed concern that the new British Prime Minister could reduce support for Ukraine compared to what it was under Boris Johnson.
He stated this in an interview with TalkTV, which was quoted by The Times and Kyiv Post.
Answering a question about Boris Johnson's imminent departure as prime minister, Zelensky expressed concern that the UK may not provide such support under a new leader.
“Honestly, I'm worried about it. We would like to have at least the same level of support. Because my personal relationship with Boris accelerated the level of British support provided. The British were leaders in such support,” Zelensky said.
In addition, Zelensky expressed hope that Johnson will remain in British politics.
“I want him to be somewhere (in British - ed.) in politics... I don't want him to disappear, but the decision is in the hands of the British people. But I am sure that whatever position he takes, he will always be with Ukraine. It’s from the heart,” he added of Johnson.
Discussing the two remaining candidates to replace him, Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss, he said:
“I would be happy to work very closely, as we did with Boris. The relations with Great Britain and Ukraine are equally close. I know that these two candidates are highly respected and have the support of the people and communities of Great Britain. We are aware of this support. We know the positive power of these leaders.”
Earlier, Boris Johnson, in a conversation with former Treasurer Peter Cruddas, said that he did not want to resign as Prime Minister of Great Britain and would like to “erase” his departure.
A YouGov poll of Conservative Party members who will decide on the next leader showed 50% thought Foreign Secretary Truss was best in Monday's first debate, while 39% backed Chancellor Sunak.
The winner of the election, which will be determined by a vote of the party's 200 Conservative members, will be announced on September 000.
