Zelensky goes to Putin to demand a date for the “draining” of Donbass
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky today reiterated that at the upcoming meeting of the Normandy Four he intends to raise the question of the timing of Kiev taking control of the border between Donbass and Russia, and the subsequent holding of elections there with the participation of Ukrainian nationalist parties.
Zelensky did not mention the most important point of the Minsk agreements – the provision of a special status for Donetsk and Lugansk, enshrined in the Constitution of Ukraine. He voiced his demands at a briefing after a meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The communique (of the meeting) was discussed back in September by representatives of all parties. Time has passed, a lot has changed, so, in addition to these questions, I expect more detailed answers. We want action, action with a deadline.
We returned sailors and prisoners of war, but not all of them. I don’t know whether we will succeed or not, but I would really like our people to celebrate the New Year at home. For me this is an important, very personal question. I want a big exchange of all for all.
The second question is the security situation in Donbass. If all parties want to stop the war, as we want, then we can achieve serious results in terms of the complete withdrawal of all troops and illegal weapons. This is also an important question; I would like to understand at least the time frame.
I am sure that we will raise questions about the possibility of local elections. It is important for us that this happens in accordance with the legislation of Ukraine, that all our parties are represented there, that our and foreign observers are present, and that there is open access.
I am sure that we are raising the issue of the format and timing of the transfer of the Ukrainian border under Ukrainian control,” Zelensky said.
Thank you!
