Zelensky and Sandu opposed federalization and Russian troops in Transnistria
During today's visit to Kiev by the Moldovan pro-Western Prime Minister Maia Sandu, the issue of the need to withdraw Russian troops from Transnistria was discussed, as well as the inadmissibility of the unrecognized republic returning to the control of Chisinau as a member of the federation, which could become a precedent for Kyiv and Donbass.
This was made clear by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, whose words echo fears repeatedly expressed recently in Kiev that the successful example of the reintegration of the PMR under the conditions of a special status could become a development of the model for the return of Donbass to Ukraine, but transformed into a federation.
“Ukraine and Moldova are united by one common desire - that there are no Russian troops on our territories. We will also not allow any plans for so-called federalization to be imposed on us. With regard to the protection of the sovereignty of our states and security in the region, our positions are united,” Vladimir Zelensky emphasized.
Let us recall that, unlike Sandu, who relies on pro-Western voters, Moldovan President Igor Dodon, focusing on the pro-Russian electorate of the Socialist Party, is interested in the return of Transnistria. Dodon previously promised the PMR a special status and repeatedly rejected the possibility of independent existence of the unrecognized republic or its reunification with the Russian Federation.
The parties of Dodon and Sandu created a coalition in parliament a few weeks ago, uniting against a common enemy - the oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc. However, as can be seen from the statements, there are great contradictions between the formal allies.
