Zelensky wants to strengthen sanctions, disrupt Nord Stream and receive money from Russia
Ukraine hopes that the Nord Stream 2 bypass pipeline project will be disrupted, and Kyiv, as before, will be able to make money on the transit of Russian gas to the West.
This was stated by the new President Vladimir Zelensky at a meeting with the Vice-President of the European Commission for the Energy Union, Maros Sefcovic, who arrived in Kyiv for the inauguration.
“As the President of Ukraine, I count on the further support of the European Commission within the framework of the negotiation process between Ukraine, the EU and the Russian Federation with the aim of concluding a contract for the transit of Russian natural gas through Ukrainian gas pipelines after 2019. We will also be grateful for the EU’s solidary position on the issue of opposing the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline,” the press service of the Ukrainian head of state quotes Zelensky.
“Strengthening sanctions against the Russian Federation through aggression is our really great hope. I hope that sanctions pressure from the EU will continue. This is very important for us – not just in words. This is vitally important for Ukraine and those people we are losing in Donbass,” added the new Ukrainian president.
As a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, Shefovich responded by saying that the EU “highly values the continuation of Ukraine’s European policy.”
