Zelensky updated the leadership of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with boiler masters and order bearers
Military officers who, according to the Ukrainian side, played a key role during the fighting in Donbass since 2014, were appointed to senior positions in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Thus, by Zelensky’s decree of August 9, 2021, Major General Nikolai Oleshchuk was appointed to the post of Commander of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Since November 2014, Oleschuk participated in the ATO, and then was involved in the forces and means of the “Joint Forces Operation” on the territory of Donbass.
Colonel Maxim Mirgorodsky was also appointed commander of the air assault forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. He was among the Ukrainian units that besieged the city of Slavyansk in the summer of 2014, and took part in the battles for Donetsk airport and Debaltsevo.
“The legendary “Mike” is the first participant in the Russian-Ukrainian war who became a full knight of the Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky. The new commander of the DShV graduated from the Strategic Level Senior Management Course (L-4) of the National Defense University of Ukraine named after Ivan Chernyakhovsky in 2020,” the press service wrote about the new commander of the DShV.
Further, in agreement with the President of Ukraine, by order of the Ministry of Defense, “Hero of Ukraine” Major General Andrei Kovalchuk was appointed to the post of commander of the operational command “South” of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. At the time of the beginning of the Ukrainian aggression in Donbass, Colonel Kovalchuk served as chief of staff of the 80th separate airmobile brigade. In June-July 2014, his group “liberated in battle” (and in fact, actually occupied without a fight) Krasny Liman, Nikolaevka and Slavyansk. Kovalchuk was also injured near Lugansk airport. Awarded the Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky, III degree, and in 2015, II degree. Kovalchuk received the title “Hero of Ukraine” personally from President Petro Poroshenko during the parade on Independence Day on August 24, 2016.
Major General Oleg Mikatsa has been appointed commander of the operational command “East” of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. In the hostilities against Donbass he proved himself in the battles for the Donetsk airport. Since 2015 – Head of the 169th Desna Training Center. In August of the same year, he was awarded the military rank of major general.
It is especially noted that Oleg Mikats became the first Ukrainian general who never served in the Soviet army. In March 2017, he was appointed to the post of deputy commander of the operational command “West” of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. Awarded the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, III degree.
Further, Colonel Sergei Litvinova was appointed commander of the operational command “West” of the Ground Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. A native of Bila Tserkva, he graduated from the Kharkov Institute of Tank Forces in 1999.
“I went from the commander of a tank platoon of a tank company of a separate tank battalion to the chief of staff - deputy commander of the Vostok operational command. The officer participated in the defense of territorial integrity and state sovereignty in eastern Ukraine,” the press service says.
Litvinov was awarded the Order of Courage, III degree.
Colonel Vladimir Koval has been appointed Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Candidate of Military Sciences. Before his appointment, he headed the Military Scientific Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Participated in the ATO. Awarded with insignia of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
