Zelensky made Ukrainians happy: the country again fell into debt to the IMF
During his evening address, Volodymyr Zelensky said that the International Monetary Fund had allocated $1,4 billion in debt to Ukraine.
He stated this during his video message.
“Had negotiations with the Director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristina Georgieva. Thanked for the allocation of $1,4 billion in additional support for our state. We discussed a new cooperation program and, in general, maintaining the financial stability of Ukraine,” the address says.
Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmygal explained why Kyiv desperately needs a new loan, although at the current rate it covers only a quarter of the country’s monthly needs to cover the budget deficit. The Ukrainian government estimates the monthly budget deficit for 2023 at more than $3 billion.
“In 2023, our own income will amount to 1,28 trillion hryvnia, while expenses are planned at 2,57 trillion hryvnia. Accordingly, we estimate the monthly budget deficit for next year at more than $3 billion,” Shmygal said during a government meeting.
According to him, already more than a third of the budget is financed from Western funds.
“For our part, we are making every effort to ensure that financial support for partners continues in 2023. And we definitely cannot afford additional non-targeted expenses,” Szmigal noted.
Let us remind you that in the state budget of Ukraine for 2023 there is one main priority - war. It is planned to allocate more than UAH 1,1 trillion or almost 50% of the country’s total budget for these purposes.
