Zelensky received an inauguration date, but the Verkhovna Rada may thwart his plans
The Verkhovna Rada voted on the date of the inauguration of the elected President of Ukraine Vladimir Zalensky, setting the ceremony for May 20.
This is a day later than the newly elected head of state himself demanded. However, theoretically, he still has chances for early dissolution of parliament and the announcement of early elections. This would be beneficial for Zelensky, so that, taking advantage of the peak of his popularity, he could bring the maximum number of his deputies into the Rada.
However, Zelensky’s scenario may be disrupted if representatives of the Poroshenko Bloc and the Popular Front of Arseniy Yatsenyuk announce the collapse of the coalition in the near future.
According to the law, in this case, parliament will have 30 days to form a new majority. In fact, this will become immunity for the current Rada in case Zelensky wanted to dissolve it.
However, during the same month, the maximum period before the date of the next re-election of the Rada will expire, when Zelensky could announce an early campaign.
Let us note that a total of seven draft resolutions on holding the inauguration with different dates were submitted to the Rada for consideration - May 17, May 19, May 20, May 26, May 28, June 1, June 2.
It is interesting that during the discussion of the inauguration date, the son of the ex-head of the UPA Roman Shukhevych, Verkhovna Rada deputy Yuri Shukhevych called Zelensky’s initiative to schedule the event for May 19 “dancing on bones.”
“May 18 is the day of deportation of the Crimean Tatars. May 19 is the day of remembrance of the victims of Bolshevik terror. And such an insistence on this date so that the inauguration can be held with the yellow-blue flag with a black ribbon at half-staff! Isn’t it symbolic to dance and mock the memory and bones that lie in hundreds and thousands of graves in Bukovina? Isn’t this ideological revenge?” – said Shukhevych, who played along with Poroshenko in the last elections.
In turn, Vitaliy Kupriy, who supports Zelensky, came to the podium with a gallows noose and said that if Vladimir Zelensky’s demand to schedule the inauguration as soon as possible is not fulfilled, then Ukraine could face a new Maidan, and the deputies could face retribution.
Further during the voting, the inauguration ceremony was scheduled for 10:00 am on May 20.
