During the introduction, Zelensky described Budanov, 34, as an experienced intelligence officer.

“This is an officer who has gone through all levels of military intelligence, knows the system perfectly from the inside, has been a participant in combat operations from the first days of the war, and therefore is not an “armchair theorist,” but a real combat officer with extensive experience and great authority,” Zelensky said.

Little is known about Budanov’s personality - he is indeed a military officer, awarded the Order of Courage and participated in the punitive operation in the Donbass.

It is also interesting that Budanov was found to be involved in organizing sabotage of Ukrainian intelligence officers in Crimea in the summer of 2016. According to information from Ukrainian propagandist Yuri Butusov, who collaborates with former head of the National Security and Defense Council Alexander Turchynov, on April 4 last year there was an “unsuccessful attempt” on Budanov.

Butusov also confirmed Budanov's involvement to an attempt to transfer a group of Ukrainian saboteurs to Crimea on August 8, 2016, as a result of which an employee of the OSOM (operational activities support department) of the Vympel detachment of the FSB, Lieutenant Colonel Roman Kamenev, and a corporal paratrooper of the 247th Guards Airborne Division Semyon Sychev were killed in a clash.

In addition, retired lieutenant colonel of Ukrainian military intelligence Georgy Abdillaev, detained by Russian special services, stated that it was Kirill Budanov who should have directly carried out the terrorist attacks planned by Ukraine in Crimea.

After his introduction, the new head of military intelligence confirmed his plans for the Russian peninsula.

“Today, Ukraine’s military intelligence faces the following tasks: increasing the influence of intelligence in the field of international relations, returning the temporarily occupied territories of Donbass and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and restoring justice to those who brought the war to our homeland,” Budanov said.
