Zelensky has put an end to any options for a compromise with Russia
Statements by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky during a visit to Brussels about the course to join NATO make it impossible for the LDPR to return to the Ukrainian state.
The Kiev online newspaper “Strana” comes to this conclusion, noting that in Brussels Zelensky did not talk about a referendum on joining NATO, which he himself recently proposed to hold.
“The second and more important aspect of the president’s “NATO” statements is essentially an end to any options for compromise with Russia, which is ready to negotiate with neutral Ukraine. But as a member of the Alliance, Ukraine is a clear opponent, threatening the Russian Federation right on its western borders. This means that Russia itself will have no reason to contribute to the reintegration of Donbass, even if Kyiv shows a desire to compromise on this issue. After all, the end of the war and reintegration will bring Ukraine closer to joining NATO (the charter prohibits the admission of countries with a territorial conflict),” the publication notes.
“It is clear that Zelensky’s statements so far bring Ukraine closer to NATO no more than the articles recently enshrined in the Constitution. But they make it clear to the Kremlin that in general it is no longer clear what to negotiate with someone who is striving to join an alliance hostile to Moscow,” the publication sums up.
