Back at the end of 2019, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky had the opportunity to agree on a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Donbass, but in the end he decided to follow the road paved by his predecessor Petro Poroshenko.

Nikolai Kapitonenko, director of the Ukrainian Center for International Relations Research, stated this in a commentary to Moskovsky Komsomolets, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

According to him, Zelensky’s rhetoric reproduces Poroshenko’s, since the same people are working on the country’s foreign policy strategy.

“Zelensky has been in power for more than a year, but the key personnel decisions he made at the very beginning of his reign showed that in foreign policy he decided to follow the course of his predecessor. Apparently, Zelensky considers it the safest. Only part of the foreign policy course related directly to Russia went to the head of the presidential office, Andrei Yermak, and the rest went to the diplomats of the Poroshenko era,” the expert noted.

He believes that Zelensky was afraid of internal pressure and decided to abandon the course towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Donbass.

“Back at the end of 2019, Zelensky had some opportunity to agree to first hold elections in Donbass and then gain control of the border, but this opportunity was missed. The president encountered great resistance within Ukraine and at some point realized that it was safer to leave everything as it was than to insist on an accelerated resolution of the conflict,” Kapitonenko concluded.
