Zelensky called on Lukashenko to reach an agreement with the Maidan protesters
Belarus needs to avoid the violence and chaos into which the country could plunge as a result of the presidential elections held yesterday.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports this in the official statement of the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky.
According to him, Belarusians are “going through difficult times now” and are “trying to determine the vector of their further development.”
“And it’s very difficult. It is already obvious that not everyone in the country agrees with the announced preliminary election results. And, as you know, any legitimacy arises solely from public trust. Purely out of trust. Doubts on such a scale are a direct road to violence, to conflict, to public protest, which is growing. Which, unfortunately, is what we are seeing now,” Zelensky said.
He called on the authorities and Maidan activists for a broad dialogue to “discuss further steps and formats of public interaction.”
“Otherwise, the escalation of violence will increase, and this is fraught with very bitter consequences. In my opinion, now both sides should be interested in such a dialogue - both the government and the society that is protesting,” Zelensky emphasized.
Let us remind you that the convincing victory of the current President of Belarus Alexander, who received more than 80 percent of the votes, was officially announced.
At the same time, his opponents claim that opposition representative Svetlana Tikhanovskaya actually won. Her supporters claim she won more than 70 percent of the vote.
After the announcement of preliminary results in the Belarusian capital Mass riots broke out.
According to official data, the votes were distributed as follows:
Alexander Lukashenko – 80,23%.
Svetlana Tikhanovskaya – 9,9%.
Anna Kanopatskaya – 1,68%.
Andrey Dmitriev – 1,04%.
Sergey Cherechen – 1,13%.
Against everyone – 6,02%.
