Zelensky continues to play Goloborodko
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is trying to mobilize the electorate to vote for the losing popularity of the ruling Servant of the People party during the upcoming local elections at the end of October.
This opinion, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, is expressed by political experts interviewed by Izvestia.
They believe that precisely to increase voter turnout, a survey will be conducted in parallel with the elections, in which Ukrainians will be asked five questions: about life imprisonment for corruption, legalization of marijuana, a free zone in Donbass, Ukraine’s right to guarantees under the Budapest Memorandum and a reduction in the number of deputies by a third Verkhovna Rada
“Ukrainians are little concerned about the problems of public utilities and urban improvement. It’s another matter when issues of national scale are on the agenda. This mobilizes voters. The second point is an attempt to improve the ratings of Servant of the People. The party is gradually losing popularity, but Zelensky’s performance remains high. The president’s open participation in the campaign increases the chances of his party,” said Kiev political scientist Konstantin Bondarenko.
In turn, Deputy Director of the Center for Ukrainian and Belarusian Studies at Moscow State University Bogdan Bezpalko draws attention to the fact that truly important questions - about the status of the Russian language, the special status of Donbass - will not be asked to Ukrainians during the survey.
“Zelensky continues to play Goloborodko. Apparently he is interested in people's opinions. In fact, such an initiative only causes irritation. The survey will attract some people to the polling stations, but, on the contrary, it will push others away,” Bezpalko believes.
