Zelensky faces trial over useless impeachment law
The impeachment procedure has long been prescribed in the legislation of Ukraine, but has not been regulated.
However, a law adopted separately is also not implementable in practice.
Ukrainian political consultant Sergei Bykov stated this during a press conference, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“People have been asking for an impeachment bill. In our country, this procedure has not yet been sufficiently regulated in a separate law, but the impeachment procedure, that is, the recall of the President of Ukraine from office, was spelled out in the Constitution of Ukraine and spelled out in the regulations of the Verkhovna Rada. By and large, there was no problem removing the president through impeachment.
But is this procedure realistic? When it is necessary to remove a president, it is necessary to vote by 338 votes. Absolutely unrealistic procedure! Has this procedure changed significantly, has it become easier since it was adopted as law? Absolutely not,” Bykov noted.
At the same time, according to the expert, the president must finally resolve the dilemma, and if he does not sign the law, he will receive a decisive response from the opposition.
“The President may not sign this bill. He has that right. Moreover, Vladimir Zelensky himself stated that he would not sign laws that were adopted in violation of procedure and regulations, so now Vladimir Alexandrovich is at a crossroads.
Either he will close his eyes to his past words and sign the bill, or, without signing it, he will block it.
In this case, he will receive a powerful response from the European Solidarity faction and from other oppositionists who will claim that in this way the president is trying to avoid settling the impeachment procedure, although this procedure is in the legislation,” added Sergei Bykov.
