Zelensky was presented with a report on Russian power in the Black Sea
Russia is using the Black Sea as a testing ground for European democracy while constantly increasing its military power in the region.
This is stated in a report prepared by the National Institute for Strategic Studies of Ukraine, which prepares analytics for the presidential office, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The authors note that, despite the presence of several NATO member countries in the Black Sea basin, Russia’s military power still exceeds their total potential.
“Russia is now the largest military force in the region. Russian control in the Black and Azov Seas is strengthening, given the almost 2019 contracts concluded in 50 by the Russian Ministry of Defense with Russian defense companies worth more than 1 trillion. rubles (more than 16 billion dollars).
This amount includes the purchase of two Russian universal landing ships (similar to the French Mistral class), which should be laid down in Kerch in 2020.
The growing militarization and military dominance of the Russian Federation in the Black and Azov Sea region significantly undermines European security as a whole.
The Black Sea region is one of the Kremlin's testing grounds for the limits of compliance of European democracies. The Russian Federation’s aggressive actions also extend to the Mediterranean.
The militarization of the region has made it more difficult to resolve armed and frozen conflicts, solve problems of separatism and strengthen collective security measures,” the report says.
According to observers, the document was actually drawn up to complain about Russia at Zelensky’s meetings with representatives of NATO, the EU and the United States.
