Zelensky will have to escalate
President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky is unable to minimize the influence of Interior Minister Arsen Avakov.
Political experts interviewed by Kommersant came to this conclusion, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“If Zelensky wants to become president of the world, he will have to escalate; he cannot be good to everyone. However conversation with nationalists in Zolote puts him in an extremely difficult situation. Having offered to resolve the issue amicably, he left with nothing. It turns out that a force scenario remains, which, given Avakov’s sympathies, will have to be implemented with the help of the military,” said Alexander Gushchin, associate professor at the Russian State Humanitarian University.
In his opinion, in this situation there is no point in expecting a Normandy Four summit in November: its main condition - the disengagement of forces - will simply not be met by this date.
“In addition, there are big questions for the president’s political strategists,” Gushchin added. “When he went to the nationalists, he had to simulate a conversation. “Everything indicates that Arsen Avakov remains a key figure, and it is impossible to minimize his influence.”
At the same time, another expert on Ukraine, author of the Carnegie Moscow Center, Konstantin Skorkin, says that the episode with the Azov fighters is an “incredibly inflated story” to which ex-President Petro Poroshenko benefits from drawing attention.
“They are interested in making Zelensky look like a persecutor of patriots. And given that Zelensky’s own media capabilities are limited, the agenda is set by his opponents,” says Skorkin.
