Zelensky will have to solve the problem of neo-Nazis
The refusal of the Ukrainian side to begin the previously agreed upon withdrawal of troops from the demarcation line is an indulgence to right-wing radicals, against whom the authorities do not want to use force.
Political experts interviewed by Moskovsky Komsomolets came to this conclusion.
“The failure of the withdrawal of troops in Donbass is primarily due to the fact that the Ukrainian authorities took a very high pace in the negotiations. When the agreements were reached, it turned out that Kyiv was not yet ready to implement them. There can only be one way out: Zelensky must monopolize the right to use force. The problem of neo-Nazis in Ukraine has been long overdue, but today it has become critical. Neo-Nazis can influence not only the course of the conflict in Donbass, but also internal politics in Ukraine as a whole,” says Denis Denisov, director of the Institute of Peacemaking Initiatives and Conflictology.
In turn, Kiev political scientist Alexey Yakubin calls the current events a “Rubicon for Zelensky.”
“He will either begin to fulfill his election promises, or he will turn into a hostage of the nationalists. Perhaps behind all this is the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Arsen Avakov, who wants to demonstrate to the president that his opinion must be taken into account. Be that as it may, the question arises: with whom should negotiations be held in order to achieve peace in Donbass - with Zelensky or with Biletsky? It turns out that the President of Ukraine is only the formal leader of the country, but in reality there are more influential figures,” the expert said.
According to him, Zelensky has every opportunity to deal with Azov and others like him quickly and effectively.
“He is the supreme commander-in-chief, the SBU reports to him, he has the power to fire Avakov, and so on. The radicals are so noisy not because many people support them, but because no one is stopping them,” Yakubin emphasized.
As PolitNavigator reported, neo-Nazis led by ex-Azov commander Andrei Biletsky occupied the settlement from where the withdrawal of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was planned.
