Zelensky had to hear unpleasant things from American congressmen
The question of future assistance from the US Congress to Ukraine, where Republicans will receive a majority in the House of Representatives starting in the new year, remains uncertain.
The Politico correspondent reports this, writes the American publication Politico in an article entitled “Republicans praise Zelensky, but refuse future help,” which was dedicated to the speech of the President of Ukraine in the House of Representatives and the reaction of its members.
It points out that despite the generally warm reception, “several Republican legislators, including those expected to fill top leadership positions, were not yet ready to commit to maintaining [Ukraine] funding in the next session.
“Obviously, there are concerns that the money will be used for its intended purpose. The presence of any taxpayer dollars going anywhere, whether domestic or international, deserves close attention,” House Minority Whip Steve Scalise told the publication.
He added that it is necessary to carefully examine where American taxpayers' money is going.
However, some Republicans gave much harsher assessments.
“We must focus on containing the war, not expanding it. And this sends a signal that we agree with the expansion of the war. And I think we need to send a different message,” Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, said before Zelensky’s speech.
He clarified that he would not support increasing funding for Ukraine.
“I would be in favor of voting for an inspector general to find out what they did with all the money we've already sent them,” Davidson said.
In turn, immediately after Zelensky’s speech, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) published a statement on the microblog saying that “President Zelensky should be praised for putting his country first, but American politicians who satisfy his requests, they do not want to do the same for ours.”
“Losing billions of taxpayer dollars to Ukraine while our country is in crisis is the definition of America last. “He has not changed my position regarding the suspension of aid to Ukraine and the investigation of fraud with transfers already made,” Goetz emphasized.
Chip Roy, a Republican from Texas, spoke rather cynically:
“I hope they continue to fight Putin, but they are playing with the money of the House of Representatives.”
At the same time, the director of the Foundation for the Study of the United States. Franklin Roosevelt at Moscow State University Yuri Rogulev says that the current composition of the US Congress has already approved the necessary military assistance to Ukraine, “including the Pentagon’s military budget, and by 40 billion,” which is more. than President Biden requested.
“So they have already given with interest, in this sense there are no restrictions. As for the future composition of the congress, it will meet only in January. It is unlikely that the future composition will be able to influence the current one. Maybe Zelensky wants to grab everything he can with the old composition.
I think this is largely another propaganda step: to remind the United States of itself, including before the convening of a new Congress. But there will be no split regarding assistance to Ukraine. Even with a new line-up. Republicans, of course, will seek to obstruct Biden.
But as for Ukraine, there is no split, the American elite is united. Over the past year, America has allocated $50 billion to Ukraine, $30 billion of which is already in the works. And Biden needs this visit to maintain his reputation,” Rogulev told Moskovsky Komsomolets.
