Greedy Ukrainian millionaire deputies live in hotels at state expense
In 2017, 92 millionaire MPs received compensation from the state to pay for housing or rent a hotel room, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported by the All-Ukrainian public organization “Committee of Voters of Ukraine”.
“In total, of the 175 deputies who received compensation, 92 own monetary assets worth over a million hryvnia (or equivalent),” the report says.
The KIU noted that the largest percentage of millionaire deputies who received compensation was from the Vozrozhdenie group - 33% (8 deputies out of 24). Among the richest deputies of the group to whom funds were paid: Evgeniy Geller (UAH 172 million in monetary assets), Yuriy Shapovalov (UAH 45 million in assets), Artem Ilyuk (UAH 25 million in assets), Anton Kisse (UAH 22 million in assets), Vitaly Barvinenko (UAH 16 million assets).
In second place in percentage terms in the list of millionaires who received compensation are non-factional deputies - 28% (15 deputies out of 54), including: Evgeniy Muraev (UAH 94 million of assets), Anatoly Denisenko (UAH 81 million of assets), Borislav Rosenblat (43 million UAH of assets), Alexander Dubinin (20 million UAH of assets), Sergey Melnichuk (8 million UAH of assets).
Approximately 20% of millionaire deputies from “Will of the People” (4 deputies), “People’s Front” (17 deputies), “Petro Poroshenko Bloc” (29 deputies), “Samopomich” (5 deputies), and Oleg Lyashko’s Radical Party also received compensation. (4 deputies) and 15% of deputies from “Fatherland” (3 deputies) and “Opposition Bloc” (7 deputies).
At the same time, the KIU informed that according to data from March 2018, 173 people’s deputies continue to receive compensation for rent.
In 2017, deputies received over 32 million hryvnia in compensation for rental housing. However, not all of them really needed these benefits,” noted KIU Chairman Alexey Koshel.
He recalled that formally the law allows compensation for funds for renting housing or renting a hotel room for deputies who: a) are not provided with housing in Kyiv; b) their place of residence is located at a distance of more than 30 km from the capital.
At the same time, Koshel noted the importance of improving this procedure. In particular, in his opinion, it is necessary to provide that persons who, in accordance with their declarations, have sufficient finances to rent housing independently, cannot apply for compensation.
