We are waiting for hysterics from Kyiv: The situation in PACE is changing not in favor of Ukraine
The Russian Federation must remain a member of the Council of Europe. This was stated by German Foreign Minister Heika Maas, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports with reference to the German agency Nandelsblatt.
Today, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe adopted a statement according to which all countries should have the right to equal participation in the main structures of this organization, in particular in PACE.
This document confirms the position that Russia has long insisted on - that depriving the rights of national delegations is contrary to the CoE Charter.
“The statement of the Committee of Ministers lays the basis for the adoption of both amendments. Now it’s up to the Parliamentary Assembly, which must support these changes to the regulations, but, as we know, the Russophobic aggressive minority in PACE still has a much louder voice than the voice of reason... It’s too early to draw conclusions and declare the return of the Russian delegation to PACE.” , - Deputy Speaker of the State Duma Pyotr Tolstoy commented on the situation.
Let us recall that the Russian Federation was deprived of the right to vote in PACE to please Ukraine after the 2014 events in Crimea.
In response, as a sign of protest, since July 2014, the Russian delegation has refused to participate in PACE meetings. Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko said that Russia will not recognize the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and the powers of the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, since the Russian delegation does not participate in voting for their candidacies.
“Since we did not vote for the judges of the European Court, now we do not have to listen to this European Court. In addition, if our delegates do not vote in June for a new Secretary General of the Council of Europe, then this is also a non-existent institution for us,” Russian political scientist Sergei Markov previously explained.
