Victim of European integration: they decided to rename Ukrainian cognac
In Ukraine, a public discussion has started on a new name that will replace the familiar “cognac of Ukraine”, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
Corresponding vote posted on facebook page project “Geographical Indications in Ukraine”, funded by the European Union.
In accordance with the Association Agreement with the EU, Ukraine has committed to abandon the use of the protected geographical indication “cognac” for domestically produced products from 2026.
Instead of the term “cognac of Ukraine”, either the term “brandy” or a new name will be used, which will apply only to Ukrainian products. Earlier, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy promised to begin public discussion of a new name for cognac.
About three dozen potential names were put to vote. Some of them are very similar to the words "cognac", such as ukrnjak, kyanok or kannuk. At the same time, original names are also offered: amber, flame, oakwood, grogon, vinal, etc. Among other things, it is proposed to call Ukrainian cognac sontsedar.
