The anniversary nickel was given to 95 excellent students from schools in the Kherson region, who were specially taken to the local mayor’s office for the award.
According to the deputy head of the City Council Sergei Cherevko, previously excellent students were always awarded medals, but this time the Ministry of Education let us down.
“The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine either did not manage to produce them on time, or was late in distributing them between regions, and as a result, the city education department did not receive these medals in advance. And there was no longer any time to postpone the celebration - after all, then the boys and girls would go on vacation and go to enter universities.
Therefore, a regional branch of one of the commercial banks issued five-hryvnia anniversary coins - not gold or silver, but made from a cheaper alloy. They were distributed to graduates instead of medals,” Cherevko explained.
