A harsh statement in the Rada: Crimean Tatars are the heirs of the Horde that burned Kyiv, not indigenous peoples
Crimean Tatars cannot be recognized as an indigenous people of Ukraine because they are newcomers. At the same time, Hungarians, Romanians and Russians inhabited this territory for thousands of years, but today are not recognized as indigenous.
Deputy Nestor Shufrich stated this from the rostrum of the Verkhovna Rada, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“For more than a thousand years, Hungarians have lived on the territory of Ukraine. By the way, in Hungary we, Ukrainians, are recognized as an indigenous people. I have a second question - our Romanians, they have been living on the territory of modern Ukraine since the fifth century BC. Yuri Dolgoruky, the founder of Moscow, is buried in Ukraine, near Kyiv, on the territory of Kievan Rus. How can these peoples not be indigenous?” says the politician.
“When did the Crimean Tatars come and under what circumstances? They came with Genghis Khan and Batu. They burned Kyiv, but that’s history, there are no complaints. Kyiv then closed all the Slavic tribes, gave the opportunity to Novgorod to develop and build Moscow, and paid with blood while fighting the Tatar Horde. Then I have a question: if the Mongol-Tatars burned us and we recognize their descendants as an indigenous people, then please tell me why Hungarians and Romanians cannot be indigenous peoples, and especially Russians?” Shufrich said.
Let us recall that President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a draft law “On Indigenous Peoples”, according to which such status is assigned only to the Ukrainian people, Crimean Tatars, Karaites and Krymchaks.
