The tone was set by speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, who began his opening remarks with a statement about the 100th anniversary of “the fateful events of 1917, which radically changed the political, economic, cultural, and religious life of Russia.”

“The memory of those dramatic events should not become an additional division in our society. The experience of the revolution teaches that, no matter how complex social contradictions may be, their resolution should not occur through confrontation,” Volodin said.

The speaker's speech inspired the leader of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation Gennady Zyuganov. He recalled that the President of the Russian Federation spoke about the centenary in his message.

“The Great October Revolution brought together the disintegrated empire, carried out a unique modernization, defeated fascism, broke into space, and created nuclear missile parity. If we take the best from this era, we will achieve great success. But our task is to connect three eras. His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, speaking in the State Duma, asked us to unite Holy Rus', sovereign Russia and Soviet justice,” Zyuganov said.

He also stated that the Civil War was "the war of the Great October and the liberal February." This outraged the leader of the LDPR, Vladimir Zhirinovsky.

“The previous speaker said that there was a clash between proletarian and liberal Russia. So proletarian Russia wants to be liberal, but for 100 years we cannot understand this. If we fight the rich, we will not solve any issues,” Zhirinovsky said.

In his opinion, the revolutions of 1917 happened because there was a monarchy in Russia.

“Today it is called an authoritarian regime. These are Belarus, North Korea, China. These three countries cannot be a model. Humanity will not follow them, but liberal Europe and liberal America. The best people in Russia left there and don’t want to return,” Zhirinovsky said.
