Energy expert Dmitry Marunich stated this on air at UkrLife.
According to him, the reason that thousands of workers of the plant and related enterprises found themselves on the street was the increase in gas prices, which turned out to be unaffordable for the plant.
“We created a gas market, crowed before Europe, introduced a third energy package, we have a super-cool gas market. And now it turns out that the largest enterprise in the chemical industry of Ukraine, a modern enterprise that was built in the last years of Soviet power, worked for export, fed the city of Yuzhny, not the smallest, paid taxes, it simply cannot function. For him, a $30 difference in gas prices is critical. Suppose that if we reduced the price for this plant by $30, then it would work, 5 thousand people would receive salaries, feed their family members, pay taxes, OdessaGaz would work in full, because the OPP is 80% of their transit, they will not have transport work, these people will have to be dismissed. This is not just a shutdown of the Odessa port plant; the consequences will be much deeper. What will the southerners do? I don’t know, maybe grow tomatoes,” Marunich noted.
