Residents of a Ukrainian city voted to return the name from the times of the Russian Empire
In the Ukrainian city of Kirovograd, simultaneously with the elections of deputies and the mayor, a survey of local residents was held about renaming, as required by the new law on decommunization. The overwhelming majority of participants in the plebiscite were in favor of returning the name of the city from the times of the Russian Empire - Elisavetgrad.
This was reported by the local publication Fotoinform.

The name Elisavetgrad was supported by more than 35 thousand voters. Next are the following options: Ingulsk (4303 votes), Zlatopol (3509), Kropyvnytskyi (1218), Blagomir (708), Eksampey (624), Kazatsky (286).
The voting results are undoubtedly unpleasant for the new Ukrainian authorities. However, media loyal to the Maidan have already clarified that the poll in Kirovograd had no legal force, was advisory, and, moreover, Maidan activists claim, was accompanied by violations - allegedly, one could vote without a passport and several times at different polling stations.
The final decision on renaming Kirovograd must be made by the Verkhovna Rada, where there is now an absolute nationalist majority.
Elisavetgrad was built on the site and named after the fortress of St. Elizabeth, which in the mid-18th century became the southern outpost of the Russian Empire, at a time when even neighboring Uman was still under Poland, and further south, the Turks and Crimean Tatars dominated the Black Sea steppes.
