Verschutz said in an interview with the publication: “Without the port city of Mariupol, the People’s Republic in Donetsk has no chance.”
Christian Verschutz, a public broadcaster in Austria and one of the last reporters still reporting from Donetsk, reports that the fight for Mariupol is still ahead. Verschutz is confident that Mariupol as a port is a strategically important goal for the DPR. “Without Mariupol, the DPR as a state has no chance of survival,” said the Austrian journalist.
Verschutz confirmed the extremely difficult humanitarian situation in Donetsk. He said: “People in the Donetsk region are dependent on humanitarian aid from Russia and through the Assistance Fund of the oligarch Rinat Akhmetov, as well as other aid organizations. Akhmetov supports 330 thousand people with humanitarian aid. It also has an interest in protecting coal mines and its steel mills in the east of the country, located partly in the area of pro-Russian forces, as well as in territory controlled by Ukraine.”
“The main problem in the region is the shortage of medicines and food,” said an Austrian journalist. – In particular, large families, single pensioners, etc. suffer. In addition, financial resources are limited. This means that chronically ill people, such as diabetics, are particularly affected, as insulin is extremely scarce and very expensive.”
Verschutz confirmed that there are outright criminals among the Ukrainian volunteer battalions. “There are several battalions,” he said, “consisting of a wide variety of people. There are rumors and stories of rape and alcoholism in several battalions. So medical workers told me how in the hospital wounded and drunken volunteers walked around the hospital with Kalashnikov assault rifles, scaring patients and staff.”
