“In August there were fierce battles for Ilovaisk between the militia and the Ukrainian army. Civilians spent 22 days without electricity, gas or water, hiding in basements. 70% of the city's infrastructure has been destroyed. Currently, 66 captured punishers from the Donbass battalion are engaged in the restoration of Ilovaisk. We filmed 17 of them, asking simple questions: who they were, where they were from, whether they killed, what they would like to convey to Maidan supporters in Russia and their relatives. Everyone sent greetings to my mother and relatives; no one admitted to the murders. Ilovaisk will be awarded the title of hero city, and these “people” will never be our brothers,” says one of the authors of the film, Daria Andreeva.
Having visited Donbass, she believes that the region is unlikely to return to Ukraine.
“There is no turning back. And these are not my words, but the words of local residents. I chose the track “MC Val – You Will Never Be Brothers to Us” as the soundtrack to the film. Its author is a girl from Lugansk named Lera. The film ends with her,” Andreeva said.
“The most vivid impression: In the destroyed Ilovaisk, I clearly understood what war is, in the worst sense of the word... It’s difficult to explain in words. The destruction of everything human, everything that is sacred to us. An eloquent illustration is one of the dead houses in Ilovaisk. Where his owners are and what happened to them is unknown. The bed is laid out, children's toys are scattered around the room, the dishes are put in the sink, the doors of the cupboard are open. And there are several huge holes in the roof, and everything around is generously covered with construction ashes. Life stopped here on inhalation, on exhalation it was already destroyed, in one gulp. This is war,” says the journalist.
