In winter, the pressure in the Ukrainian gas transportation system will drop to critical levels
If Ukraine does not sign an agreement on the transit of Russian gas, its system will have too low pressure and remote Ukrainian villages risk freezing.
Former Minister of Economy Viktor Suslov stated this on the NewsOne TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Suslov, Russia could complete the construction of Nord Stream 2 this year and leave Ukraine without gas transit.
“The agreement has not yet been signed and negotiations regarding Ukraine’s purchase of gas next year are still weak and sluggish. There is also no agreement on the transit of Russian gas through the territory of Ukraine. A lot will depend on the solution to these issues, including the stability of our heating,” the economist said.
He also added that Germany and other EU countries have resolved with Denmark the problem of completing the construction of Nord Stream 2.
“Denmark has agreed, now the construction of this Nord Stream 2 will be completed quite intensively and, possibly, that at the beginning of next year, if not at the end of this year, it will go into operation, which will enable the EU to transit gas bypassing the territory of Ukraine. In this case, we may have serious technical problems, despite Naftogaz’s assurances that enough gas has been pumped in for the winter,” the ex-minister noted.
“There are certain technical problems that need to be understood... If there is no transit, there will not be sufficient pressure in the gas transportation system of Ukraine, which means it will be quite difficult to pump gas to all settlements that are connected to gas. Because the presence of transit made it possible to maintain the necessary working pressure,” Suslov said.
