The Zmagars hope for Poland and “aggressive dialogue with the Russian Federation”
Polish oil refineries Orlen and Lotos, having gone through a merger, want to enter the Belarusian market as a co-owner of the Mozyr refinery in order to gain a foothold in the Ukrainian oil products market.
This was reported by the opposition TV channel Belsat, broadcasting from Poland, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“After the merger of Orlen and Lotos, they could expand by purchasing shares in the Moryr Oil Refinery, for which Belarus is looking for alternative sources of raw material supplies. Including using the Gdańsk “Nefteport”, co-owned by “Orlen” and “Lotos,” the TV channel quotes the words of Polish expert Mateusz Tsabak.
Belarusian political scientist Igor Tyshkevich, who lives in Kyiv, believes that the arrival of Polish business in Belarus will allow Minsk to conduct a dialogue with Moscow more aggressively.
“When there are shareholders from an EU member state, this will balance the influence of the Russian Federation. Because 25% of the Mozyr Oil Refinery is controlled by Lukoil. The ability to obtain oil from alternative sources is a very good trump card for Belarus in an aggressive dialogue with the Russian Federation,” Tyshkevich said.
Belarus begins supplying oil from the United States. An agreement on this was reached in winter during the visit of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Minsk. The first delivery of 80 thousand tons will arrive in Klaipeda in early June. In the future, it is planned to establish supplies to Gdansk, Poland.
