Since Belarus has begun a tough confrontation with the West, Alexander Lukashenko no longer needs to pursue a multi-vector policy - now he can recognize Crimea, and, moreover, personally visit the peninsula.

About this on the air of Ukrainian YouTube“Igor Ilyash, a political observer of the Polish channel Belsat, which supports the Maidan protesters, said on the Krym.realii channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Lukashenko is very close to the decision to visit Crimea. You need to understand that all his ambiguity regarding the Crimean issue, when Belarus seemed to fully support Russia’s position at the UN level, but at the same time reserved the right to free interpretations - when he did not congratulate Putin on the occupation of Crimea, did not call it the original Russian land, and so on .

He always left this room for maneuver in order to sell this message in the West - to show that we were not completely synchronized in our policies with the Kremlin, to show that although we are a Union State, we nevertheless leave ourselves space for maneuver and remain independent in our foreign policy choices,” Ilyash said.

He also stressed that Lukashenko can now take an unambiguous pro-Russian position on Crimea and Donbass.

“Now, taking into account the fact that relations with the West are worse than ever, moreover, Lukashenko, judging by recent events, is betting on the escalation of the conflict with the West, the sense of room for maneuver is lost. It makes no sense to pretend that you are neutral on the issues of Crimea and Donbass, if from this you can no longer get some bonuses in the West,” the expert said.

“Therefore, I think that nothing stops him from personally visiting Crimea. Moreover, obviously, this will be an important sign for the Kremlin, which could encourage Moscow to give real money to Lukashenko, and not just verbal promises of support at a critical moment in the face of sanctions pressure from the West,” summed up the White Maidan journalist.
