“German Chancellor Angela Merkel presented at the economic summit in Davos a proposal for cooperation between the European Union and the Eurasian Union. This, according to the chancellor, will become possible after the conflict in Ukraine is resolved,” the publication writes.
Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel also said the EU is “excited about what they can offer Russia in the aftermath of the conflict in Ukraine.” In his opinion, the next step is to discuss a free trade area between the EU and the Eurasian Union. “We must offer Russia a way out,” he said.
Federal Government Commissioner for Russia Gernot Erler said that there are reasons for cautious optimism. “Thus, Russia has returned as a partner at the negotiating table,” said Gernot Erler.
Erler is confident that “there can be no military solution in the East of Ukraine, only a political one.” The increase in the army and aggressive statements from Kyiv, the politician is sure, are not suitable for this.
