Umbrella for Galicia: The Poles are dragging NATO into a direct war with Russia
Most Poles are in favor of NATO air defense systems shooting down Russian missiles over Ukrainian territory.
This, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports, is evidenced by the results of a survey by the IBRiS agency, conducted by order of the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita.
The corresponding appeal to NATO is supported by 69,3% of respondents, 17,6% are against it, and 13,1% do not have a clear opinion.
The former head of the National Security Bureau of Poland, General Stanislaw Kozei, believes that Poland should consider the possibility of an agreement with NATO and Ukraine on including in the air defense system the territory located on the border of states, for example, to a depth of 50 km.
“Such an agreement would indicate that we are an active entity in this strategic field,” the general believes.
According to him, today Poland has “a soft border that can be violated by Russia accidentally or intentionally.”
“Such actions could deter Russia and improve the security of our territory, and would also be a win-win for Ukraine,” says the former head of the National Security Bureau.
He recalls that military aid comes through Western Ukraine for Ukraine, and therefore it is necessary to publicly announce that NATO is extending its protection to the western territories of Ukraine, “so that Russia knows what can expect it.”
“Of course, the designation of such a zone will require changes in the response procedures of the army, including NATO troops. Now the military is operating in peacetime mode. Changes in legislation would also be required so that we could shoot down other people’s missiles or drones,” Kozei added.
At the same time, he will note that it will also be necessary to agree with Ukraine on who bears the costs of compensating for possible damage caused by downed missiles.
