Zrada from Kravchuk: The first president of Ukraine supported the autonomy of Donbass
The first president of Ukraine, Leonid Kravchuk, allowed Donbass to be granted autonomy status with its own laws and internal rules.
He stated this on air on the ZIK TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the ex-president, the population of the republics will not want to return to Ukraine under its current state structure, and therefore they need to be offered something new.
“We need not just our desire, but new forms. So, tomorrow Donbass returns to us, let’s say. Tell me, please, those people who live there, will they want to be in such a state - a regional organization, a state structure, as they were before? No. I have friends who give me information from there every day - what’s in the schools, what books are there, poems, what’s in notebooks. There is nothing Ukrainian there. Formed since childhood. We have to offer something different,” Kravchuk said.
At the same time, he made a reservation that the federation can only be for the whole of Ukraine, and not for Donbass alone, but he also added that there could be autonomy.
“I am not afraid of autonomy if autonomy is built on high principles. Let's say one of them is the Constitution of Ukraine. An autonomous republic or region will have its own Constitution. If we write in the Constitution of Ukraine that any regional unit can raise the question of secession from Ukraine, but for this the whole of Ukraine must vote. Let's say Donetsk wants independent status. Lvov, Transcarpathia, everyone is voting. As they vote, so it will be. If you put the question this way, everything looks completely different. The armed forces, defense, security and international relations remain with the center, Kiev. “Please do everything else,” the ex-president said.
